Many of the local people earn their living from the sea. The king crab was a
big money maker in the 70's and into the 80's but the pressure was
pretty hard and the stocks decreased so it is not the big thing
anymore.

Fishing
is a way of life in Kodiak. Crab, salmon, herring, clams, halibut, cod,
pollack, and shrimp are common catches taken from the sea.
Here is Dave taking out some aggression on a 17 leg starfish. These
things are notorious for getting into crab traps, in this case
dungeness pots.

There is a sense of freedom out there on the ocean that is kind of hard
to experience in other kinds of work.
Just being out there alone and far from land, pitching up and down in the waves
with the wind and
salt spray in your face can be kind of a great feeling.

We found a school of grayling and caught
quite a few. Some of them would even bite on a bare hook. Maybe it
looked like one of the mosquitos swarming all around us.

Old Harbor
This area was originally settled as Three Saints Bay by Grigori
Shelikof in 1784 but a big earthquake and sunami in 1788 destroyed it
so most of the people moved to where the village of Kodiak is today.
The settlement there is now known as Old Harbor.
