Kodiak and Afognak The waters around Kodiak and Afognak are rich with fish so many people earn their living from the sea. There are big operators but also the small time fishing operations run by local families. There is a sense of freedom out there on the ocean that is kind of hard to experience in other kinds of work. Just being out there alone and far from land, pitching up and down in the waves with the wind and salt spray in your face can be kind of a great feeling. Then when the weather gets rough you can try to hide behind an island until it blows over or if you are too far out you just have to ride it out and that can get kind of spooky at times.
