There
are a few villages you will encounter traveling around Kodiak Island.
Old Harbor on the east side is kind of hard to get to if you are not on
a boat or float plane.
It is just across from Sitkalidak, an
unihabited island that occasionally gets a trapper or two that spend
the winter there.
This area was originally settled as Three Saints Bay by Grigori
Shelikof in 1784 but a big earthquake and sunami in 1788 destroyed it
so most of the people moved to where the village of Kodiak is today.
The settlement there is now known as Old Harbor.
It is a remote location but has fantastic silver salmon fishing when
they are running. It is best to catch them when they are still in salt
water and are fresh and bright silver. Such a beautiful fish they are.
Some fishermen store their gear here but the town doesn't get too may
visitors. All the local people are involved in fishing in some way and
are a pretty tight knit clan.
The Russian Orthodox Church still has strong ties to this area and once
in a while one of the priests stop in on their rounds and perform
ceremonies.
