Seraya Timur is the east point of Bali. It is a little fishing village off the beaten path and the people are very friendly.
The men were resting after carrying a boat all the way up the stairs
from the beach. That is a serious haul. You kind of get an idea from
the picture.
They were very proud of their outboard motors that they kept in rows at
the community shelters. One guy held his motor with pride and requested
that I take a photo.
Then
they came out with some food and coffee and insisted that I join. It
was a refreshing break from the tourist crap that can be a bit over the
top in some places in Bali.
That Bali coffee is really good if you are a coffee drinker.
It is arid along that part of the coast and there are white pvc pipes
strewn throughout the trees alongside the trail to bring water from the
mountain stream nearby. It looks kind of comical with all that white
piping hanging in the trees.
Bali has dry areas along the east and north coast. Most of the coast
between Amed and Seraya Timur has a sharp drop to the sea where there
are small beaches lined up with small fishing boats or jukung.
From Padang Bai up and around to Tulamben is a nice drive. You can follow the coast or cut across inland.
It is an easy trip to follow the coast all the way around the island of
Bali stopping on the way in Candidasa, Amed, Tulamben, Lovina and
anywhere else that strikes your fancy.
It could be a relaxing 3 day trip. It is a good idea to have paperwork
in order if you are driving because the local police sometimes pounce
on opportunities to generate a little revenue from the tourists as
well. Don't feel bad, they hassle the locals with equal vigor.
