Places to Stay in Kuta
Here are some suggestions for places to stay in Kuta on Poppies Lane 1
Bali – Kuta – Accommodation
There are expensive resorts and budget accommodations not far from the beach. Poppies lane 1 and 2 have a bunch to choose from. There is no need to book in advance but some prefer to.
Most visitors take a Blue Bird taxi from the airport. If you come up Kuta Beach road you will pass the Hard Rock Cafe and notice a Mc Donalds up ahead. Right at that point is where the alley known as Poppies Lane 1 begins. The taxi will be able to turn there and squeeze down the alley to your accommodation there if you choose to stay there. Here are a few listed here. There are many more to choose from, these are just a sample.
Kuta Puri Bungalows
![]()
Right away on the left is the Kuta Puri Bulgalows. It is a plush place with rooms from 35.00 US to 65.00 US for the bungalows. This looks like a beautiful place but I have never stayed there. The management tells me that all prices are negotiable and they give good discounts. Many hotels in Bali will offer a discount if you ask them. The beach is not far away.

It is kind of a bogus email for such a nice place but that is what they have.
Kedin”s Inn
![]()
Kedin’s Inn is behind Kedin’s Cafe and has rooms for 60,000 to 120,000 rupiah. They have a couple of small pools. It looks like a good place to stay. The cafe up front is not bad either.
phone (0361) – 750513
Ayu Beach Inn
![]()
Ayu Beach Inn is a little further down the lane. They don’t have air conditioning but the rooms are ok at 60,000 to 75,000 rupiah. They have a small pool and a friendly staff. This is a pretty good budget accommodation.
phone (0361) 752091
fax (0361) 753314
Masa Inn
![]()
Across the alley continuing on is the Masa Inn. I think that this is the best value. Nice place. AC, Hot and cold water, Ref., Cable TV, Phone, Breakfast
6 pax 500,000 rupiah
4 pax 350,000 rupiah
3 pax 250,000 rupiah
2 pax 200,000 rupiah
1 pax 150,000 rupiah

La’Walon Bungalows

Just past the Marsa Inn is the La’Walon. Friendly staff, nice pool. Ok rooms. About 160,000 rupiah single.

Stayed at the Masa last month and loved it. Only thing we missed was wifi from the comfort of our rooms.
Are there spots close by with free or reasonably priced wifi where I can use my laptop in the shade over a beer?
Also is there another Inn similar to Masa quality and quietness for Rp 300,000 that has wifi?
Thanks
Hi Dennis
Thanks for the update.
I haven’t been in Kuta recently so my info is a bit dated – but there are a few wifi hotspots on Legion St where the internet is free provided you buy a beer of two (or coffee or sandwiches)
Try the ESC or the Maccaroni cafes. Anyone have others to add?

Me and my bf are arriving in Kuta/Legian Bali in July..will we be able to find cheap budget accommodation if we just turn up? or will everywhere be fully booked for a double/twin ensuite??
VERY GOOD WEBSITE!!!!IT HELP ME A LOTS!!
Hello Carys,
I think that you will be ok to just show up. Either you or your boyfriend can do a quick look around while the other watches the bags and has a cold beer!
As you probably already know, most of the budget lodging is on Poppies one and two.
cheers
dp
Thanks RANEE!
dp
I think I will arrive at kute on 29th,July.
I want to live in Kedin’s Inn. How can I book a bed? I will travel my own.
Hi Ron,
Just take a blue bird taxi from the airport to Poppies Lane1. The cab should turn in the alley just before the McDonalds and go up about 150 meters.
Kedin’s will be on the left.
Try to give them a call. The number listed above but you might just have to chance walking in. If they are full – there are several other places in the proximity.
Just sit in the restaurant and have a cold beer or soft drink and cool down a bit. Ask some of the other travelers or just hoof it and see what comes up.
There are two more good, mid priced, places further up the road on the other side.
cheers
dp
Thanks a lot!
I think i can find it easily!
Hi, thanks for the website! I think the rates are outdated!
i stayed in Ayu Beach Inn last week and it costs me 290,000 per nite! (which is still cheap tho) haha..!!
Hi Sophia,
Yes my Bali section is outdated. Note a publish date at the end of every story.
I used to spend my winters in Bali , but after a short stint in East Timor, I moved to the Philippines where I live now.
Thanks for the update! It is my feeling that 290,000 rupiah is a bit steep for the Ayu Beach Inn, however.
cheers
dp
I have booked my plane-ticket to Bali, and will arrive on 30th,July.
What’s the price of one bed of kedin”s inn now? Because I will travel my own.So I only need a bed not a private room.
Does it have the dorm rooms ?
Hi Ron,
If you are going for the cheapest accommodation – try heading up the alley just past TJ’s Restaurant.
There are a few loseman in there that are really a good value.
I don’t have Kedins Inn most recent price list but maybe there is a reader out there that can help out on that one.
Usually if the place has a pool the cost will be higher than in a simple place. Kedins is not at the bottom end (if that is what you are interested in)
cheers

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info think ill be staying at the Masa. I am arriving on wed and i cant wait. will aanyone be in the area between the 20th – 27th?
Hi Marc,
Good call, the Masa is in a good location and is a good value.
dp
Just called the Masa Inn, apparently booked full for end of July though hardly surprising. La Walon only had delux rooms left. Is it really safe to just walk into a place on July 28th like Kedin’s I or II and hope to find something for three weeks?
Or is it just safer to wait until September (if you can) or little later when they’ll just throw rooms at you?
Plan to go to Bali early July n interested to stay @ Kedin’s Inn.
New rate now: fan 150,000; ac 250,000.
BUT they don’t want take any reservation.
The officer simply saying we always full so you better call 2 days prior, probably there’ll room vacant. Hmm… business has been good i guess.
Oh btw, the phone number above are for the resto. If you want to call the hotel the number is 0361 – 756771
Hi Korea Mike,
I always took my chances and just walked in but I am not really current on the situation in Kuta right now.
It used to be that you could swing some really big discounts by just walking in.
There are a number of places to stay on Poppies Lane 2 as well.
dp
Hello shyguy,
Thanks for the update!
I need help to keep things current because I spend most of my time in the Philippines now.

may i have the roomrate for kedin’s inn??
Hi ny lean bee,
I do not have the current rates on Kedins. If any readers have been there recently, please advise.
Thank you in advance.

Hi,
How do I contact the hotels kedin’s inn Hotel? I called the number at this page and is the Cafe, not the hotel.
Thanks.
Hi Juan,
Sorry – that is weird that they can’t help you out because it is the same owner and the same complex. The Kedins Inn is directly behind the Kedin’s Cafe.
I can’t get more info right now as I am in the middle of Cotabato in Mindanao.
Any readers willing to help out with this?

Hi, Does anyone have the current price of the listed hotels above? I guess i will be there in late august 2009, I callled Ayu Beach Inn already they said the price is Rp 400,000 per night with AC for 2 persons.
Thanks,
JL
We were at the Masa Inn in Feb priced INR 300,000. As of July it’s INR 400,000. What’s the pricing like in mid Oct? and will the vacancy rates be higher.
Has anyone stayed on Poppies Lane I with a double bed,Cable TV, minibar, A/C for less than INR 250,000 ?
Please let me know their name and email.
There is new spot next to Masa called Pesona anyone checked it out?
Thanks
Dennis
Hi Dp and all
Anyone heard about KUTA INN located at Poppies Lane 2? I just booked a room for 2 from 14 Aug o 16 Aug.
Wonder how is the condition of the facility? And how long it take to walk from the KUTA INN to beach?
It’s located inside a small alley from Poppies Lanes 2 from the map provided
It’s only 225,000 rupiah per night for 2 including breakfast and air cond
P/S: Thanks Dp for info sharing. It’s very useful
I want to book room in Kedin Inn/Ayu Beach Inn for December, can I? I want to book from now. how about the price?

Hi dp,
I found your site to be very informative! It has a “by travellers for travellers” feel to it. I will be in bali in late october. After going thru your site, I have decided to just wing it, without reservations and see what the day brings. A question: will the authorities take action if I camp out(sleeping bag) by the beach for the night?
Just a little info for travellers interested in masa inn. The website is unavailable. I’m nt sure if they’ve got a new website, but currently masainn.com ain’t working.
Once again, many thanks for the valuable info dutchpickle!
If airport taxi takes us to Fat Yogis on Poppies Lane 1, what route will he take? Should he enter from Jalan Legian or is it better to enter from Kuta Pantai or the beach road?
We know how narrow and dark the street is after 10 pm. We want the shortest ride on Poppies Lane 1.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks
Hi brewster,
Lodging is cheap in Kuta. Camping on the beach would be a huge hassle and most likely things would come up missing when you were alseep.
Consider also that there are no public toilets. I don’t think that the authorities would take interest but it would not be ideal.
There are plenty of budget places in Kuta, Padang Bai, Lovina,Ubud etc where you can get a room for less than 10 USD per night.
sorry about the inactive link – Masa Inn
About camping – In remote places camping can be a real adventure. I have spent many a night camping in Papua Barat when it was still Irian Jaya.
It just doesn’t work in the tourist areas.
I like your idea of winging it! Just slow down and look at a few places before making up your mind. Pay the first night only because someone might turn you on to a real gem that you would want to move to the next day.
cheers
dp
Hi Dennis,
Poppies Lane one does not go all the way through to Legion Street.
The Blue Bird Taxi should come up along the beach road and turn right just before the Ronald McDonald on a surfboard in front of the McD’s. They can get as far as TJ’s but most will not go further.
Both the beach road and Legion St. are one way streets.
Poppies Lane 1 can be accessed by walking in from Legion St. on a walkway/motorbike trail that connects to Legion St. near a tattoo parlor. Some taxi drivers can access Poppies 1 from either end but most don’t want to wind through the back alleys.
Poppies Lane 2 is wider and can be accessed fron either end by taxi.

Hi dp,
Thanks for the advice on camping overnite on kuta beach. I have a few more queries though.
I’d like to make a trip to gili trawangan and lombok. However, i am unsure if it’s worth the travel. Any suggestions on what would be worthwhile experiences on these two islands?
Also, I’ve gotten varied responses about the travelling times (boat rides) to these islands. Some say it takes 8hrs while others claim only 2hrs journey. Would be awesome if you could shed some light on this. Cheers mate!
Hi brewster,
Trawangan and Lombok are ok. Most of the tourists and expats congregate around Senggigi on Lombok but some like to hang around Kuta Beach Lombok in the south.
Trawangan had the rep for being a big party and dive spot for the gap year crowd. Gili Meno and Air were more laid back. Magic mushrooms are heavily advertised and there are quite a few dive shops on Trawangan.
There are some nice dives, but the Gilis are not considered to be any thing extraordinary – considering that this in Indonesia.
Mr. Perama was experimenting with a run on his boats from Bali to the Gilis but I don’t know if it ever became an established rout. It wasn’t that nice a trip during rough weather.
Regular ferries leave to Lombok from Padang Bai on Bali. There are smaller boats that ferry tourists between the mainland of Lombok and Trawangan. Times will vary dramatically depending on what boat. Some people fly from Denpasar (Kuta Bali) to Lombok to save the hassle of riding the boat. (you would still need to catch a lift to Trawangan)
The beach front village of Padang Bai on Bali could be a pleasant alternative to the Gilis. There are 3 beaches including one very nice one that can only be walked to.
There is also good diving nearby and on Nusa Penida. Padang Bai is easily accessible from Kuta Bali using the Perama tourist shuttle.
There are plenty of nice little restaurants and losemen/hotels and you wouldn’t be stuck there like you would be on a small island like Trawangan.
These are my observations:
On the Gilis I get a feel of being in a destination created for tourists.
There is very little history or Indonesian “culture” to experience.
Most of the workers are boys from Bali and Lombok but almost no one comes from the Gilis. It makes for a strange society.
Some travelers have had the best time of their lives here and recommend the experience to their friends. It probably depends on what you are looking for.
The Island of Lombok is Islamic and is far more interesting to me.
cheers

I didn’t plan on reserving a place when I arrived since I’m arriving in the low season (dec 2nd) until I realized my flight gets in at midnight. Does this matter? Will I have any problems getting a place, realistically, at around 2-3am?
Hi dd,
I think you will be ok, most of the bigger resorts have the front desk staffed 24/7.
The smaller ones and the homestays will lock the gate at night.
cheers
dp
i called each hotel u recomend, all false info!! none of them is cheap as u write above,,,
Hello Lutfi,
Right you are! Prices have changed since April 16, 2006 when this page was put up.
That is why I include phone numbers and website addresses whenever possible.
I was kind of hoping for updates from other travelers but that hasn’t happened.
With around 700 pages it is difficult for me to keep them all current. Even the Lonely Planet falls behind on their updates.
I spend almost all my time in the Philippines now so my Indonesia and Bali pages are better used to get ideas rather than current rates.
cheers

Hi…Can I and my bf go straight to Bali to Kuta Puri Bungalows and certainly get the room for us on Dec 26th this year???? I’m afraid it will be fully-booked…
Help me out, plz, I love this bungalow…

Hi there,
My partner and I are are getting married in Bali next year and have booked the wedding at a nice place in Canggu.
We realise this is a little way out from Kuta but as we are doing things on a budget and are used to backpacking we really want to stay in or around Poppies 1 or 2. When we were last in Bali we stayed at A.P Inn and found this to be fine for the price. Has anyone stayed there recently? I have tried emailing them to no avail!
We have about 20 guests coming including our parents and most would like to stay where we are staying (we’ve warned them it will be cheap and cheerful!)but would obviously like somewhere half decent.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks,
Sara
Hello Sara,
I wish that I could be of more help but I am living in the Philippines now and have not been able to update the Bali section of this site for a few years.
The prices I listed here and the contact info was current in April of 2006 but they need to be updated.
Maybe there is a reader out there that can help.
…another suggestion – ask on some of the Bali forums to see if anyone has any ideas. If it was just a small group I think you would have no problem winging it, but with a group of 20 or more it will be more difficult.
You might have to split up with some of your party staying at different places.
Good luck!

may i know what are the interesting places to visit in Bali?is it worth to visit the national park?
i’m planning to visit pura besakih temple, mount batur and elephant cave. I hope that u may recommend some interesting places to me.What is the taxi’s rate from Bali airport to Poppies Lane?thanks a lot^^
Hello ling,
Last time I was in Bali, the charge from the airport to Poppies 1 was around 50,000 rupiah. It has likely increased but just take the “Blue Bird” taxi and you will get a fair rate.
Bali is just one surprise after another – ceremonies, dance, temples and the occasional troop of monkeys running across the road. Volcanos, beaches, surf, diving, snorkeling – every day will bring a new experience.
enjoy

Dear guests,
Hey all friends,
I will open my new property on February 14,2010 called LEGIAN GUEST HOUSE located northeast corner of Legian Kuta with address Jalan Nakula Timur Banjar Legian Kaja ,Legian,Kuta Bali.
Now start to receive new booking with special offer in our website at http://www.legianguesthouse.com
Best regards,
Wayan Suena
hi dutchpickle,
if i plan to go Bali in a small group (5 person),the ‘bluebird’ can carry how many passengers?because i’ll need a taxi as i arrive in bali. how much time will it take to reach temple pura besakih from gunung agung?what kind of transport should i take for my journey to gunung agung and temple pura besakih?
thanks^^
Hi ling,
Upon arrival at the airport in Kuta you might want to take two taxis to town – they are relatively cheap and the 5 of you will likely have bags.
There are heaps of van services in Bali – so it might be best to organize a van and driver/tour guide for the day. All 5 of you should be reasonable comfortable.
One of the cheapest ways to get around Bali is to use Perama Tours to get to destinations like Padang Bai, Candidasa, Lovina, Tulamben or where ever, and then base from there. That way you will not have to return to Kuta every night.
Have a great trip!

thanks for the valuable information^^
Hey dp,
Stumbled across yer site while looking for accommodations in kuta. Fair play ta ya man. The info given here is priceless. I’ve made ‘reservations’ at Hotel Lusa and Masa Inn but none have actually gotten back to me as yet. Means I gotta call ‘em up. Am a little worried but after reading some of the comments here, I might just wing it when I get there :)
Last time I was there was a decade ago, and I’m guessing a lot has changed. Here’s to a week of R&R. Thanks fer the info :)
pms,
“I might just wing it when I get there :)”
…sounds like a plan! Have fun.

Hi..
Nice pictures you have..
Do you know if Kedin Inn has any safety deposit box?
I am looking for cheap place but with safety deposit box so I can leave my valuables there when going to beach or diving.
Anyway, I just got back from Bali also last November but I stayed in AC hotel in poppies so kinda expensive. You can see about the hotel in my web, if you’d like (http://travellingangel.wordpress.com/2010/01/07/budget-hotel-hotel-in-bali/)
Plan to go there next month and I prefer fan room hotel with pool & safety box this time below Rp. 200k. so if you have any hotel recommendation, please let me know ;)
pms,
I stayed in lusa on my last visit. Book trhough internet/email and their reply is very quick.
why dont you email them here:
info @ hotellusakuta.com (Mr. Adi or mr. Wayan)
Hello novangely,
I don’t know if they have safety deposit boxes or not – sorry!
It’s best not to put too much trust in safety deposit boxes anyway…using ATM cards seems to be a great way to avoid having a load of cash lying about
cheers
dp
ps. Thanks for the additional info
hello sir..
nice blog… more info i can get it… did you know more about dutch in bali?
Hello thly,
The history of the Dutch in Bali is very brutal, but no, I have not researched it.
dp
thanks for reply me. brutal??? are you sure??? hope so much you willing to researched it if possible and share to us and sir how can I communication with you personally , did you have email or something like that?
Hey all, well I’m back from my week in Bali. Sorry couldn’t remember what I used ta comment earlier but I’m, pms. Bali’s definitely a lot different then when I was last there. Stayed at Masa Inn and it didn’t disappoint. I mean it’s kinda a budget place so I wasn’t expecting much but it wasn’t too bad. I had read reviews that some ppl were treated a bit shoddy just coz they were asian. Well let me tell ya, I’m asian and the staff there were just as friendly to me as they were to the caucasians. Some ppl just like to whinge I guess. The pool is clean and the grounds were immaculate. My room was clean and they clean it everyday, well unless you don’t want to. There is a safety deposit box in the room and the whole week I was there, nothing got stolen :) The prices have changed since dutchpickle put this up but their website is quite functional.
novangely, lusa never did get back to me but masa inn did so I went with that.
Oh yea, the airport departure tax have gone up a bit. T had put aside money for that, so when I say a different price, I was just glad that I had some money left over from my budget. It’s now 150,000RP for the departure tax. It’s still 50,000RP for the cab ride to Kuta but I think it’s a different pricing for everywhere else. Hope that helps anyone else. Cheers and enjoy Bali. I’ll be back :)
Hello Puspa,
Thanks for your comments and information! It is very helpful.
The Bali info is getting a bit dated because I don’t visit there anymore – so updated info from people that have just been there is really great!
cheers
dp
Greetings to all. This website has been a great help, shed me some lights! Will be visiting Bali in March and their Nyepi New Year falls on the 16/03/10. I’ve booked MasaInn, prior reading all these… Wondering how do I spend the 24 hours, confined in the hotel. Any prudent advice or tips? Or should I go out of Kuta and pick Ubud, etc… Thanks! Have been cracking my head…
DP,
thanks for the info. Well, as I tell you before, i need safe deposit box cause I plan to go to beach/take diving and better not bringing valuable things eg. cellphone etc if possible.
Puspa, that’s weird if Lusa hotel didnt respond you that quick. But I am glad you could get Masa Inn.
Yes, I heard Masa Inn is good but too bad their hotel is over my budget :p Also I sent them email before, but they never replied.
[I had read reviews that some ppl were treated a bit shoddy just coz they were asian. ]
> well, I think they do this mostly to domestic tourist. I had some experience before, not with Masa Inn but usually at restaurant etc.. They serve foreigner first than domestic tourist, kinda sad though..
As for taxi, I usually walk until airport exit gate to catch Blue Bird Taxi on the street. 5min walks byt it costs me Rp.35k to reach poppies 2.
Hello novangely,
For sure – taking valuables to the beach is not a good idea.
I don’t rely too heavily on safe deposit boxes either – unless they are at the front desk.
cheers
dp
Thanks DP, I’ll follow your advice on that deposit box.
Anyway, if you have any plan to go back to Bali and stay in budget hotel in Poppies lane, I got this from Indonesian Backpackers community.. It’s in Indonesian but if you see the first page, you can find some update picture/info (see spoiler) on budget hotels in Poppies Lane, Kuta, Bali.
hope it will be useful ;)

We are planning our trip to bali on 13 june to 23 june 2010 and we bought the cheap tickets from Airasia. Can you make the reservation for 3 adults? we will
get Bluebird taxi. How much will it cost us per night for 10 nights? – our budget.
Thank you!
wye
Hello wye,
You will have to contact the hotels directly because the “dutchpickle” website does not make reservations.
There will be plenty of Blue Bird taxis waiting at the airport to take you to town. The rates on the rooms has likely risen since I did this page in April of 2006 so it will be good to get in touch with the front desk to find the newest rates.
Have fun!
dp
hey does anybody know the name of the hotel behind the Havana Club Bar in Poppies 1??
do you have a triple room for 4th-7th July 2010 ?
and how much is it?
please do a quick replay
thanks before :)
this is really a good website :)
anyway i’m coming to Bali alone dis 31st july-09th august
just booked a room at The Kuta Inn for 31st july- 2nd august by phone, they gave me a price for 150k IDR/night… they might gimme more discount if i’m planning to stay until 9th august, hopefully i can just add 700K idr but if its not maybe i’ll try Benesaya 1 Beach Inn, too bad tht benesaya doesn’t accept booking by phone.
so wht do u say guys? its better to stay in The Kuta Inn or Benesaya 1 Beach inn ?
i neer ur advice,
thx and regards.
cheers :)
