A really great find is the Taman Ayu Bungalos off of Poppies Lane 1.
This family run place is a good value with rooms starting at 40,000
rupiah and up including breakfast.
The rooms are nice and clean and there aren't any mosquitoes like you
can often find even in the expensive resorts. There is no air con but
the fans seem keep the rooms comfortable.
You can take a cab from the airport but the drivers are terrified about
coming down the narrow alley that is called Poppies Lane. It continues
to narrow until it becomes a walkway and a path for motor bikes. Some
of them will refuse the trip but it is not really a very big deal.
Some will want to drop you off at the Masa Inn which is ok but you
shouldn't have to walk the extra distance in the heat, especially if you
have heavy bags. (There are some pictures of the Masa Inn on the Kuta -
Places to Stay page).
The Masa Inn has a swimming pool and is an ok tourist hotel but the
Taman Ayu is far better for those on a budget. The Taman Ayu has a more
personal feel and is a more pleasant place to stay.
The local drivers will have no problem. You have to turn left at TJ's Mexican restaurant and carry on about 100 meters.
Go up the street past the Lima Satu (another good place to stay but is
more expensive because it has air conditioning). This place seems to
attract a Japanese clientel.
There is a small shop just across the road and a cheap internet with a
good connection straight up the road across Legian St. A bright orange
sign there advertises the rate of 150 rupiah per minute which is about
the cheapest you can find in Kuta.
All in all the Taman Ayu is about the best value and a very convenient
location in Kuta. Parama is just up the way on Legian St and Poppies is
a half a block away with loads of restaurants, bars, internet and a few
travel agencies. It is an easy walk to the beach too.
