Padang Bai - Bali - scuba diving lessons
Waterworx Dive shop
If
you are considering scuba diving lessons a good place to get certified
would be Water Worx in Padang Bai.
Owned by 2 German guy Wolfgang and
David, it is a comfortable friendly place to get started.
They use a
large pool in Candidasa for initial lessons because it allows new divers to get used to their gear in controlled
conditions.
David has a very professional and smooth technique that
makes learning a breeze.
He is very thorough and does one on one
instruction with an emphasis on safety.
The
first dives are usually done in the Blue Lagoon just outside of Padang
Bai because it has very mild conditions for the beginner and has an excellent
variety of marine life.
In one small clump of coral there were 3 beautiful
leaf scorpion fish lounging and a fat black frog fish sitting
on the top.
In that same coral, a moray eel was watching what was going on surrounded by 17 shrimp
and several hundred glass fish surging back and forth when a black
snapper suddenly swam through.
When diving with Wolfgang in the harbor channel an enormous school
of fusilears came past.
Swimming around us, above and below there
were probably well over a million and we were engulfed with fish passing by inches from our faces.
We just remained motionless for
about 15 minutes and watched the show. It was amazing.
There were
also sharks, a turtle or two, and an enormous gorgonian fan with a seat
cushion from the Lombok ferry resting next to it.
After a while the whomp, whomp, whomp of the Lombok ferry passed over.
It was
cool to lie back and watch it pass. Padang Bai is definately a good
place to spend a few days.
If you decide to go diving, Gili Biaha has some nice swim through caverns.
If you get around the corner in the current and look up there are often
a few sharks swimming around.
You can do the same dive many times
and see new stuff each time.
Mimpang and Tepekong always have something interesting going on too.
The
current at Tepekong can really rip especially during a full
moon.
Nusa Penida usually has a steady current that
sweeps you along.
If you use it instead of fight it you can have a
relaxing dive and cover an enormous amount of territory with little
effort.
A nice thing about having a base in Padang Bai is that you are not in a
remote location so it is easy to do some day trips when you are not
diving.
I am kind of partial to Water Worxx but there are others to
choose from as well. I think that for lessons it would be a good choice.
