Ubud - changing money
Ubud is more of a place to relax and chill, but some of the foreigners
keep busy buying the local artwork and crafts and exporting them to
their home countries.
The Balinese have a natural artistic talent and
their work is appreciated everywhere. Selling Balinese crafts can be a
pretty good business or just a way to finance more travel for you
travel junkies. It sure beats picking grapes or working on a kibutz
somewhere and can be quite profitable. Plus it is great fun.
While you are in the neighborhood you can change money at the currency
exchange in the post office across the street. It is not part of the
post office but at the same counter in the same building.
If you are
changing large amounts of currency this is a favorite because of the
favorable rate of exchange and general reputation of honesty in their
dealings. When planning to change larger amounts you might want to make
an appointmet so they will have enough cash on hand.
The best rate of exchange is for very new crisp 100 USD notes. They
should be newer than the year 2000 and without any flaws. There is a
different exchange rate for 50's and 20's and torn or marked bills are generally
not accepted.
The year 1996 is generally not accepted either because
there was a flood of counterfeit 1996's and everyone is fearful of
them. Try to get almost new bills from your bank checking front and
back for ink marks of other imperfections.
