Cambodia
Here are some pictures of Ankor Wat and the road to Poipet, the border
town on the way to Thailand. The ruins of Ankor are a great place to
spend a few days. This was 1999. At that time the tourist
infrastructure was pretty well established already with some expensive
hotels and service to and from the airport in Siem Riep.
There are budget places to stay and good restaraunts in Siem Riep as
well. Quite a few travelers pass through this town because it is not
too far off the beaten path. A few wear the "Danger Land Mine" Cambodia
t-shirts but most of that sort of thing has been cleaned up a long time
ago. There is a local museum where you can look at some of the weapons
and mines from a harder time.
From Phnom Phenn it is handy to take the boat upriver to Siem Riep for
around 20USD. It is kind of an interesting trip. A few travelers take
the road. There are huge catfish in the river that get caught up in the
fishermens nets on ocassion. They usually try to release them back to
the river but once in a while they die in the net.
You can also take the boat downriver to Phnom Phenn if you are going
that direction. Some travelers head up to Battambang, the second
biggest city in Cambodia where there were some real hard times during
the Khemer Rouge period. Some go down to the coast to Sihanoukville and
others are on their way to Vietnam. In 1999 there was not an easy way
to travel between Laos and Cambodia but probably that has opened up by
now. If anyone has more recent information about border crossings and
wants to contact dutchpickle we will update our info.
There is a web site www.talesofasia.com that has a lot of up to date information about Cambodia. It is a really good site put up by an American expat who lives there.
