Eating dog – warning - graphic photos
Dog meat, frogs, pork and other “unclean” meats are never eaten in most parts of Indonesia because it could never be halal or acceptable to the Muslim dietary regulations, but in non-Islamic areas these meats are eaten with gusto and reserved for special events.

In Alor the dog is prepared with great care and a gourmet sauce of onions and local herbs is put together to make a very popular dish. It is usually only made for special occasions, in this case New Years Eve 2007 on Pulau Pura.

The dog is given a hard blow to the back of the head and the fur is burned off over an open fire. The meat is then de-boned and cooked further in a large wok before the seasonings are added.
(Note: Andre has corrected this error. The meat is chopped up with the bones. see below. I tend to stay away from dog meat and pork myself and opted for a chicken so I didn’t notice all the bone chips)

Update by Andre’ the international conoseur of dog meat
SOLANGBALI DOG !
really funny to see the “New year” puppet became such a celebrety just having sacrified his life for “poor” people ! ! and thanks Saint Richy ! You also are a cool man and I will suggest in the big DGC (Dog’s God’s Council) to upgrade you to the level of D.A. Dog’s Angel … wouaf wouaf wouaf !!!!
just One unacurate information U give : the dogs are never unboned (in the regions I know : sumba savu flores and alor).. but totally cut in small pieces WITH THE BONES. You unfortunately didn’t take part in the “potong” (cutting) session. EVERYTHING is eaten from the head to the intestins (which are emptyed then washed and grilled for the people hwo had cut the meat). The liver is the “top” of the delikates and generally given from the house lord to the “honor” guest (I ate quit many of them !)… The meat is by the way mixed with a big amount of bones splitters and eating it U have to be carefull because dog bones are very hard. There are just two exceptions they don’t generally put in the pot : the males genitals and the tail which the “survivor dogs” or the pigs will love !

Ihope U will rectifie that wrong information very soon : spreading around such lies about the dog eaters could be dangerous to U : the indonesian law would certainly condamn U to 25 dog bites (trousers down!) …
I was with koni trecking to APUI, overnight there and coming back to Lembur the next day. Last week we were also on the top of the Maru Volcano (he summit of Alor) with a falilly living there in the jungle. There were no dogs so we ate the termites : it’s fucking excellent !
no problem if U like to publish the pics ! …if U like to make a link to my site no problem eather !
probably we will delay a little our trip to sumba : missing the pasola but coming there again when the people get more time to start the gorong gorong productions again !
have a good time ricky,
friendly,
andré
best friendly greetings also from Koni & familly.
Thanks Andre’, you are a trip!

I live in australia and i find that so terrible toward dogs.
Hi hannah,
I don’t care to eat dog either, but it is done in some parts of the world. To them it has the same significance as roasting a chicken.

Extremely cruel. Very inhumanity.. Heartless… no wonder they live in poverty, because they are not Blessed.. They are deserve for it.
Hi elsie
Anyone that eats meat has blood on their hands – cows, goats, pigs or dogs or whatever.
The western practice of keeping a dog on a 3 foot leash all day is rather inhumane too. At least in Indonesia dogs run free.
Hello Antoine,
Stay tuned!

Hi, I am Lia and I come from alor but now I had stay at Jakarta for six year…
thanks for the story about “eating Dog”…
so excited to read this!!! and make me wanna fell to going back to my beautiful Island…
How can one can be so rude to the others and cursing them just because they eat different food… For some people, it’s disgusting, for the others eating dog is a way to survive… Open your eyes… and especially your heart…
Andre, bon courage! Tu fais un merveilleux travail, mieux que les “non-dog eaters”! Chapeau…
Ricky see you in the philippines and thank you for sharing this.
Hello Fey – thanks for your perspective!
Andre really is an amazing person and seems to live in a different world than most of us – I learned a lot from him – but never became interested in eating dog ! he he!
cheers
