Travel by Pelni

Pelni ferrys make the trip from Kupang to Kalabahi every 2 weeks or so. Third class tickets only costs around 54,000 rupiah and there are plenty of benches to lounge on.

There are lots of flying fish and dolphins to look at on the way over.

The other deck passengers will stop by to ask you the 4 basic questions (from where? age? married? religion?). Hello mister. Some of them have very interesting stories about their own travels.

The sun can get intense so you might have to switch to the other side of the boat halfway across if you want to stay in the shade. Just the reflection of the tropical sun of the water can burn you.

There are cabins, but book in advance to reserve one because they are almost always full.

There is a cafeteria on the upper deck that has pop mie and coffee in addition to a regular menu. The ships galley also serves plain meals included in the price of the ticket.

Kupang to Alor takes around 12 hours and the ferry Awu continues onward all the way to Makassar on Sulawasi. Getting around Indonesia by Pelni is a great way to get around if you are not pressed for time.
