It is best to arrive in the morning at the Indonesian Embassy in Dili because
they will not accept applications in the afternoons. Completed
passports are handed out in then.
If you are are a good talker and respectfully request a 60 day visa the officials might very possibly go ahead and give you the 60 days. As a rule it takes a bit of persuasion and sometimes a letter written in Indonesian will do the trick.
It takes a week before they will have the paperwork complete unless you once again can convince them that you have an emergency that demands that you leave the country immediately.
The cost was 35 USD the last time I went through but that was Dec 2006 so things might have changed.
You can make good use of your time in East Timor if you land up waiting a week or more. There is a lot to see but Dili is quite a bit more expensive than West Timor.
Another helpful hint is that if you are arriving by land from Kupang in West Timor be sure to request 30 days even if you only plan to be there a week because it will take time and money to get the East Timor extension if you overstay.
The officials on the border when arriving from West Timor can be most unhelpful and will give you the minimum time that you ask for. It is rather an unfriendly way to treat arriving tourists in a country that could really benefit from more visitors.
The Backpackers Guesthouse near Tiger Fuel in the Mandarin area is the best place for travelers to stay in Dili. Say hello to Henry and Rita from the pickle.
