Bohol Tarsiers

tarsiers-bohol-004Tarsiers of Bohol

These cute little tarsiers are a big tourist attraction in Bohol.

As with all animals that live in the jungles, they are having to deal with shrinking habitat.

tarsiers-bohol-007It is very difficult to see tarsiers in the wild because they are nocturnal and spend their nights looking for insects.

I’ve see seen them in the wild in Indonesia but not yet here in the Philippines.

These are daytime shots at one of the tourist places. This one has 27 captive tarsiers that get a steady diet of crickets.

Cheesy, but what can I say?  I only had two days to spend on Bohol.

tarsiers-bohol-003One of the tarsiar websites says that they are no longer stuffed and sold to tourists but I don’t think that was ever a big problem. Many are still caught and displayed in the many tourist traps.

I’m not sure how they are fed but they are supposed to love to eat cockroaches, so that shouldn’t be a problem for their caretakers. Cockroaches are not rare in the Philippines.

(Actually I have found out on subsequent trips that they are fed crickets.)

Huge Python and birds – youtube video – this is a cool video!

By having so many tourists exposed to the plight of the tarsier, maybe the overall benefit of education and awareness outweighs the personal disadvantage to the ones held in captivity.
