nuts-huts-bohol-014Nuts Huts Resort – Loboc, Bohol – Nuts Huts is a great base for renting a mountain bike or motorcycle and exploring the Chocolate Hills and other local attractions. The food served here is outstanding!

Nuts Huts youtube video – great little eco resort on the bank of the Loboc River

Cris and Rita met while teaching English in China and teamed up to build this backpacker style eco-lodge in Bohol about 10 years ago.

Nuts Huts has a rustic setting that makes you feel part of the jungle, especially at night when all the sounds begin.

Both mountain bikes and motorbikes are for rent. After climbing down those stairs you might want to opt for one of the motorbikes.

Nuts Huts is 750 meters down a dirt road from the main hard top highway. It’s a bit of a bumpy trail but don’t worry – it’s the right road!

Tarsier Farm - youtube video

nuts-huts-bohol-001Simple accommodation runs 600 pesos per night for a fan room with mozzie net. Discounts apply for stays more than one night. I think the rate drops to 500 pesos per night if you stay more than one day.

The cr (comfort room) is tiled, which is a first for me. I never saw a tiled cr in a nipa hut before.

nuts-huts-bohol-010The dining area is halfway down the 275 stairs that lead to the huts by the river. This is definitely a place for fit people.

I really enjoyed my cup of coffee and roll (with chicken) while looking out over the river in the morning.

nuts-huts-bohol-015It must have been a nightmare to build these stairs. This is just the lower section (check the video).

Leyte to Bohol Ferry – youtube video

nuts-huts-bohol-016The view is great and you get a chance to catch your breath. This might also be a good place to meet other travelers and exchange ideas.

nuts-huts-bohol-004Going “native” can be a lot of fun, especially if you haven’t experienced the jungle before.

There are barges that go up and down the river with camera toting tourists clicking away – but that is to be expected in a heavily visited place like southern Bohol.

There are also some 1970′s style street lamps lining the riverbank that really look very strangely out of place  but it must be part of the master plan.

nuts-huts-bohol-002The rooms are simple but comfortable. There are not many mosquitoes but I would use the net anyway.

Down by the river.

It would be interesting to hear from other travelers that have stayed at Nuts Huts.

Mountain biking!

March 2009 update – Nuts Huts revisited

mountain-bike-004I stayed at the Nuts Huts resort on the Loboc River in Bohol again last night.

Its really a cool place – the food is great, the scenery fresh and green, and there’s a lot to do in the surrounding area. Mountain biking seems to be the ideal way to get around.

img_0487I took a TMX motorbike down there from Samar because I like the independence of being able to stop anytime you want and have more freedom of where to go. Traveling by bike has it’s drawbacks during the rainy season but you learn to just deal with it.

mountain-bike-005Cris is a serious fan of mountain biking and has some real high end equipment.

We only stayed one night, but enjoyed every minute of it.

Cris and Rita really put a lot of time into making this resort a great base for discovering southern Bohol.

We had taken the ferry from Bato in Leyte to Ubay in Bohol. When we left this morning we caught the Kinswell Shipping ferry fromTubigon, Bohol  to Cebu City.

The fare from Bato was 200 + 200 +230 pesos for the motorbike.

The fare from Tubigon to Cebu City was 100 + 100 (promo Fare) + 500 peso for the motorbike. We drove the winding road between Carmen and Tubigon through the Chocolate Hills.

    Hello rierus ernst,

Nuts Huts is set along the edge of the Loboc River in a jungle setting.

I saw a few guests there with children and they seemed to enjoy it.

The food is good and the staff is great.

There is no beach at this resort in the hills of southern Bohol.

Mountain bikes and motorbikes are available for rent.

I am not exactly sure what you are asking but I hope this helps.

  3. hey dp,

i’m planning a backpacking trip to the philippines and i’m stripped for time. can only do 2 weeks off from work back here in the states. but i definitely want to see bohol. i’ve been hearing raves about nuts huts and being that i’m a nature freak, i’d love for this place to be on my itinerary.

question: how does one go about making reservations to this place?

any leads would be amazing. thanks!!

Bohol has a lot to offer and has a solid tourist infrastructure. Nuts Huts has both motorbikes and mountain bikes for rent. The bicycles are real bikes – not cheap China Wal Mart jobs.

They also have a very nice restaurant, up on stilts, where you can enjoy your meal while looking down at the river. It’s also a good base where you can meet up with other travelers and get fresh ideas.

I think most people would enjoy a stay here – just be ready to hike up and down a serious flight of stairs to get there and back!

    cheers

dp – ps If you do stay there please send a quick review of your impressons – thanks.

    DP,
I was wondering if you could give me any information on getting to Nuts Huts. What’s the best way(or cheapest) of getting there straight from Tagbilaran you think?

Take a taxi/bus to Loboc then the ferry? Or get there by the highway?

Do you think most taxi drivers would know about this place?

Would it be hard to get there by bus?

    thanks!

    Hi greg,

Taking a boat to Nuts Huts would probably be the coolest way to arrive but I am not sure where to catch it. It could let you off at the riverbank right in front of the resort. I am pretty certain that the Rita gets groceries from town that way.

There is a trail off the highway that most locals would know about – a sign alongside the road points the way. A taxi probably could NOT go all the way there because trail is pretty bumpy.

I saw a few customers arrive on the back of a motorbike and that seems to be a fairly common trip for the drivers.

If you got off the bus at the trail head by the highway, you could walk, but its a good kilometer and then you will have to walk down around 300 stairs to get to the riverbank where the cottages are.

Nuts Huts is a gold mine of information about the surrounding area – caves, tarsiers, Chocolate Hills etc

Cris and Rita rent out motorbikes and bicycles for those that want to explore on their own.

    Hi DutchPickle,

Hope you are recovered from your nasty motorcycle accident, that Kiwi ‘Bruce’ told me about?

Myself, my Aswa and my 29 year old son, on 3 week visit from UK, spending 3 days on Alona Beach for ‘PhilHashBash2011′ on 4/5/6 March 2011.

We would then like to spend night of the 7th @ Nuts Huts if possible – awaiting reply from Text to Chris & Rita.

Question: Is it possible to take a Loboc River Cruise (or just hire a boat), and got dropped off @ that ‘landing stage’ for ‘Nuts Huts’, on the Loboc River itself?

    Hi there gain

I was to go back home (philippines) next year and tour my other half somewhere in Bohol. Nuts huts seems relaxing and nice. What are the prices to stay? and if we stay here can we go round chocolate hills.

    Hi Ann,

The Nuts Huts in Bohol is a cool place to stay and base your travels for a few days. I usually take my motorcycle from Leyte and just drive over the Chocolate Hills on Bohol Islandif it interests me that trip. Motorcycles and Bicycles are also available for rent at the Nuts Huts. I think that you could walk to the highway and catch a bus to the Chocolate Hills Carmen as well.

I enjoy some of the other less popular Chocolate Hills sprinkled in between the rice fields that you come across while touring Bohol if you have a bit of time on your hands. The road between Carmen and Tubigon is nice for that and there is usually no crowd or tour buses on that road.

I do not have the current price lists for the cottages they rent out down by the river.

The cafe is the highlight of the resort for me because you can just chill with some excellent coffee and bagels while looking out across the river. You can meet some interesting travelers here too and get some ideas.
