Prony the Python

prony-python-001Huge Captive  Python – Prony

This Philippine python was captured less than 500 meters from where he is now kept in a cage for the tourists to visit.

It must be a boring life but at least he is well fed.

prony-python-010Prony does get a whole pig to swallow every now and then and his caretaker seems to have a genuine attachment to him.

prony-python-013… this python earns a good wage.

It costs 5 peso to enter the animal farm and with tips and everything else, he earns his keep.

prony-python-009Prony gets a steady line of visitors and the donations roll in at a steady clip, because you have to pay extra to go inside the cage and take a pictures.

Several flying lemurs became compatible cell mates with Prony by clinging to the top of the cage.

Philippine eagles and other birds atrophy in nearby cages.  Not flying must screw up their wing muscles.

This whole thing seems rather cheesy, but in reality, it is very difficult and time consuming to find these animals in the wild.

prony-python-017It’s more rewarding to see a sleek python with vividly fresh color  and sparkling eyes in the wild, but how many of us really spend time in the jungle?

It’s so much more convenient to hop on a mini bus at the hotel and drive ten minutes to the cages.

I have been blessed with the opportunity to view quite a few pythons in the wild near my place in Samar but I realize that this is unrealistic for most people.

prony-python-016Not only does it require arduous trekking, it takes a lot of time. Most tourists are just not that into wildlife, so this still gives everyone a chance to enjoy nature.

The biggest detriment to wild animals is the destruction of their habitat, so at least places like this make people aware that some very rare and beautiful animals live in the jungle here and are worth protecting.

Kuya Kim has a show on channel 2 that is a huge hit in the Philippines.

  1. how true that prony was killed last month?

  2. We were there a couple of weeks ago to see Prony. They told us he was sleeping. He wasn’t moving at all, though. Could it be that he is really dead?

  3. I just came back from my Bohol trip. Prony is absolutely alive! Not kicking, though.
