Ubay Bohol

Ubay, a port on the northeast end of Bohol Island, could be a good base for budget travelers, and it’s a good entry point for those arriving from Leyte.

Bohol reminds me of Bali in a way. The island gets a lot of tourists, there is plenty of high end accommodation in the south, the roads are good, the people are sweet, and there is a lot to see.

Canned tourism is available with barge rides down the Loboc River and tour buses full of adventurers explore the look out at the Chocolate Hills.

Goody-Goody Lodge

Goody-Goody Lodge

The Goody-Goody Lodge is an outstanding value at 100 pesos per person, (or as they say in the Philippines – 100 pesos a head).

When I go back to Bohol for a closer look, this is where I will stay and will take a motorbike along to provide more freedom.  Motorbikes for rent can be found too, and are a great way to see the island at your own pace.

The nearby market by the pier has veggies, fruits, and lechon manok (chicken).

Off street parking

Budget Pension House

Gated off-street parking is a big plus.

The staff can cook for take out, but it seems like quite a complicated process, so it’s best to just walk to the market and get your meals there.

ubay-bohol-005The rooms are clean and simple. The cr  (or comfort room) is shared, and is clean too.

There is a cr on the ground floor level if the water pressure upstairs drops.

Huge Bohol Python – this is a cool video

ubay-bohol-004The resident monkey is a bit skittish and appears to be agitated most of the time. You have to keep your distance because he could be a biter.

There are a lot of captive animals on Bohol, especially the tarsiar, because they are so cute and draw the tourists.

There is a big python, “Prony”, on the south side of the island that was raised in captivity and now generates a good income for it’s owners too. He just sits in that cage all day long, like a worker in a factory, wondering how he got in that jam.

ubay-bohol-010We caught the “Mother Mary” pumpboat at 9 am to try to get back to Leyte before the weather got worse.

It rolled in when we were half way to Bato on Leyte and gradually built up into a signal one typhoon. We were happy to be back in Leyte before it got too bad to sail.

We drove from Bato to Ormoc in a driving rain but at least we were wearing rain gear. We made it back in time to spend New Years Day with friends and family.

ubay-bohol-011There are several larger ferries that make this run too, but it was New Year’s Eve and we just wanted to get the first boat out.

I was able to just drive up the gangplank at Ubay, but had to hire 3 porters to lift the bike over the sea wall when we got to Bato. (20 pesos each)

The fares are around 200 pesos per person and also 200 for the bike plus 50 pesos port fees.

ubay-bohol-009The boat left on time, Filipino time, 10am sharp. (9am boat)

I have never seen a boat leave on time yet.

ubay-bohol-012This was the first time I’ve seen a life jacket drill by the crew.

There have been a lot of ferry incidents and sinking recently and I think that the Coast Guard is tightening up regulations a bit.

    Hi Rosemarie,

    Nice to hear from you!

Bohol is really a beautiful island and I plan to make another trip over there next week. My cousin is coming down from Manila and I promised to take her to Donsol, Bohol, Cebu and Dumaguete on Negros island.

Bohol is getting more touristy every year but I still enjoy it. I tend to travel on a budget and try to find out of the way places to eat and sleep for the night.

I take my habble-habble so it really is an inexpensive holiday.

    Keep in touch!

    Hi Rosemarie,

Tacloban is nice enough, but as you mention it might take a while to acclimatize. It gets pretty hot year round!

I don’t know about any developments about the airport becoming an international port.

The Agas Agas bridge on the way to Sogod is open to the public now, and might be an interesting day trip from Tacloban.

    have a great day!

    Kamusta ka,

I enjoy hearing about your trip to Ubay, Bohol. I will be in Maasin City in May/June 2010, and we hope to spend a couple of days in Bohol.
I am guessing we will need to take bus or other transportation further south of Ubay to see the Chocolate Hills? I will also be on budget, but want to be able to see and visit the Chocolate Hills area. My fiance’ and her daughter are from Maasin City area, and have never been there.
Salamat kaayo sharing your travels. :)

    amping,
    Danny H.

    Hello Daniel,

Very few tourists come to Bohol via Ubay and there is very little tourist infrastructure there.

You will likely have to catch public transport. Bohol is very touristed in the south and is rather expensive as a result.

    Cheers
