Hotels in Bontoc
The Pines Kitchenette and Inn isn’t a bad place to stay with a double costing around 350 pesos a night with shared bath.
There is a hopeless internet cafe in the back that you can find after winding through a maze of hallways.
It is cheap enough but I was never able to open an email account or anything. If you are heading to Sagada there is a fast connection in the lower level of Alfredo’s.
There used to be a few freelance guides hanging around waiting for westerners to show up but tourism has been very slow lately.
An old regular, Francis Pa In has relocated to the Churya-A Hotel on the main drag where he tries to snag foreigners passing through. He will still show up at the Pines if he hears of any tourists staying there.
The Pines has a live band playing some nights and they might be ok if they could turn down the volume a bit.
I had to leave and headed over to the Cable Cafe a neat little place on the main drag near the other hotels. The food there is good and the entertainment was too.
It is no problem finding a room in Bontoc and it looks like the Churya-A Hotel and Restaurant might be the new lonelyplanet preferred place to stay. It is amazing how much influence that book has. A business can be made or destroyed at the stroke of their pen.
Sometimes it might be ok to just put down the guide book for a second and try experimenting on your own.
All cities in the Philippines are structured the same. There will be hotels near the bus and pier and the restaurants will be near by. Trust me. You don’t have to follow in some wankers footsteps. In the outback it is more challenging but it is a good idea to get advice from people that are familiar with the area and it is a great way to meet people.
Bontoc is a great base for travel in the Cordilleras. Buses or Jeepneys go to Banaue, Tinglayan, Sagada, Malagkong, Tabuk and many other villages. There is a museum, market, and plenty of places to eat. There are no Jollibees yet which means that Bontoc is not yet a complete Filipino city.
