Chewing betel nut – no spitting please!
There is a big push in Bontoc to put an end to “spitting momma”.
Chewing betel nut is a traditional custom in the mountains. It gives you a mild rush or burst of energy but stimulates the saliva glands so the chewer constantly wants to spit. This results in unsightly red splotches all over the side walk.
