Climbing Coconut Trees

I decided to head up into the mountains to visit my friends Mat Mat and Jovi who lives around 3 kilometers from the road up in the mountains past Kawasan Falls in Cebu.

The trail is very easy to follow up to the 3rd waterfall but then it gets a little sketchy.

img_2661.jpgThere is a beautiful canyon if you continue up stream but it will require swimming a short distance.

Cameras, cell phones etc will have to be left behind for that leg of the trip.

We crossed the river and headed up to Barangay Sorsogon to a farming district on the top of the mountain to pick some coconuts.

img_2807.jpg It is about 3 kilometers from the road so you get a little exercise at the same time.

I tried to climb one of the trees but it is kind of hard on the feet.

Mine were a bit tender anyways because I had to walk barefoot up the mountain after one of my sandals fell apart.

img_2764.jpgI like the "Islander" brand but even they can only take so much abuse. They don't seem to use as much glue between the layers of foam as they used to and once they separate the strap pulls out.

One of the girls walked the entire distance barefoot without whining so I just decided to shut up and keep walking.

img_2700.jpgO'Pong was the one to do most of the climbing but then Jovi and Mat Mat decided to do a little climbing as well.

They are both mountain girls and zipped up those trees effortlessly. It was impressive but all those mountain people learn to climb when they're kids.

The milk from the green coconut, or buko juice as it is often called in the Philippines is a sweet and thirst quenching drink.

img_2729.jpg Afterwards the coconut is split and the white meat of the coconut is scraped out and eaten.

The funny thing is that the local dogs love to eat the coconut meat too. They are pretty skinny hounds and will eat whatever they can.
