Scuba Diving – Moalboal Cebu
The main draw to Moalboal is the scuba diving. I think it gets heavier dive traffic than Sabang near Puerto Galera on Mindoro.
Many of the shops are German or Korean owned/managed and the clientele reflects this trend.
The reef and Pescador Island get heavy dive pressure but this also has the positive effect of making the local residents realize what an asset it is to them to keep the reefs from damage.
Dynamite fishing is common in many parts of the Philippines but here it would not be tolerated.
Almost all dives are from pump boats – large outrigger type vessels that can hold around 20 people.
There is the boatman with at least one assistant and usually several dive guides depending on the amount of divers.
The main thing to remember is that when surfacing do not come up under one of the bamboo outriggers because it can smack you in the head especially when the water is choppy.
The boats tend to rock from side to side when they are not under way so one minute the bamboo is out of the water and the next it is coming down quite forcefully.
Photography is very popular and some of the dive shops sell dvd’s at rather high prices. The dive costs are reasonable at most of the shops but there is flexibility in cost.
Perhaps Qou Vadis has some of the cheapest rates and shore dives are even cheaper.
They also have cheap rooms available for those watching their money.
I will try to get specific information about the dive shops and organize a dive directory if time permits.
