kapuso-kamilya-leyte-007I enjoyed my stay at this simple lodging house near the shore of Sogod Bay more thanĀ  I would have at a 5 star resort. This lodge is owned by the same people that own/operate Chad’s Lodging House. The old Boy is a bit of a strange bird but his wife was very charming, baking local treats for us.

kapuso-kamilya-leyte-001It was such a peaceful place to relax that we landed up staying 4 nights, instead of the one night we had planned on. There was not much going on and it was hot as can be, but the laid back people in the area made it hard to leave.

kapuso-kamilya-leyte-004We paid 500 pesos per night for one of the two rooms in the cottage.

img_40081There were no other visitors so we had the place to ourselves.

img_3993There are at least 3 small “restaurants” within walking distance and several sari-sari stores to get supplies. I did bring along a small motorbike so we were able to tour the countryside at our leisure.

img_3959I snorkeled with a manta ray and we spent a day looking for whalesharks but were unsuccessful in that endeavor.

kapuso-kamilya-leyte-006We had a refrigerator, 24 hour electric (with short outages) reasonably good security (I don’t reccommend leaving valuables in any lodging house or hotel), nice plants and pleasant courtyard.

img_4010It seems to me that the Pintuyan district will blossom into a tourist destination in the next few years because it is simply too nice and peaceful. The locals should benefit from and scuba or whale shark watching businesses that get established here.

img_3960There are small bays and coral reefs like Napantao up the coast that are outstanding places to snorkel and dive. There are some issues with the sanctuarys that have to be ironed out because of political bs that is socommon in the Philippines but everything should smooth out soon.

img_4012An idea would be, to come down this way on your trip to Surigao or Camiguin Island off of the north coast of Mindanao.

img_4053People that like package tours and 5 star resorts might not be too keen on this route, but it would work out well for those with an adventurous spirit.

Sogod Bay, especially this side opposite Padre Burgos, is really a hidden gem and is now easily accessible.

  1. Are there diveshops nearby? I’m thinking of the possibility of staying in a cheap place and diving sogod bay

  2. Hi Caryl,

Most of the dive shops are on the Padre Burgos side of the bay. There is Gunters - Southern Leyte Divers, Sogod Bay Scuba Resort, and Dive Peter’s Shop.

The lodging at the resorts is priced for tourists.

Dive boats do come from Bohol and Cebu to dive this side of the bay as well.

There was a French guy that was building a dive shop on Napantao but I have not been back there to check on the progress in a few years.

The snorkeling is great however, so bring a mask and fins if you have them and just go for it!

    cheers

  4. Hi Mark

There is a pension house near the hospital in Sogod - 350 pesos - single. It wasn’t anything special but it worked for me one night.

I don’t have the phone no. handy, sorry.

There is quite a nice hotel in town too but I have not stayed there yet. Wish I had more detailed info for you.
