Camiguin Island back roads – Camiguin is a peaceful little island that could be explored for a few weeks if you have the time. I was only there for three days so I didn’t
even scratch the surface.
These are just the observations of someone passing through like a whirlwind.
There is a smooth coastal road all the way around Camiguin Island. You can make it around the island in less than an hour…however there are all kinds of little turn offs along the way that I love to explore.
I was a bit weary after a ride from Manila to Zamboangs and was just resting for a few days in Mambajao but did a little adventuring.
There are some waterfalls and springs that are said to be very nice but I spent most of my time relaxing and eating good meals and drinking cold San Miguels at the Roof Top Hotel in Mambajao.
These horses are hauling copra, or dried coconut meat, to wholesale buyers in town.
The people are a friendly lot and it was a joy to talk to them. Many of them speak English but I forgot to ask them what dialect they use locally.
It’s surprisingly rugged in some areas.
This caribao hauled a load of bananas down from the hills. He got the munchies and grabbed a bunch to eat.
Horses and Caribao are used extensively as pack animals on the farms.
Camiguin Island is getting popular as a second home for some Europeans.
It is a nice enough place but I think it would get boring after a few months because of it’s remoteness.
The dutchpickle looks like a goon all wrapped up like that but most Filipino long distance motorcycle drivers do the same.
The same in Indonesia and Timor. Very few drivers will go long distance without wearing sleeves and a head scarf.
The big advantage for me is that I really don’t care about what others think and just do what I want. It took me a few years to learn that philosophy.

Hi Elizabeth,
I am not sure where to rent mountain bikes on Camiguin Island but suggest checking at the Roof Top Hotel. The owner there is very helpful and can steer you in the right direction.
