Fort Pilar – Zamboanga
Fort Pilar is now a shrine for candles and a place for mass and people to walk around on the weekends.
It was not always this boring. Just reading the history of this magnificent fort can give you goose bumps.
Imagine, if you will, 3000 Moro invaders attacking this fort and destroying it in the 1700′s.
This fort was originally built to protect from invaders and pirates from the southern Mindanao and Jolo in the year 1635 by a Jesuit priest, Melchor de Vera for the Spanish govt. They originally called it the “Real Fuerzade San Jose” and later changed to “Real Fuerza de Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Zaragoza”.
After a while people got sick of the long name and just called it Ft. Pilar.
The Dutch, the Moros, British, Japanese, and Americans all had some fun blasting away at it but now it leads a boring life indeed.

Hello bryant,
I like Zamboanga. It’s the gateway to Sabah in the south and all the islands in between.
Why not take a trip there and see for yourself!

hello! been in Zamboanga last March 15. 2011and was billeted at the old but enchanting Lantaka Hotel (by the sea). fell in love with the place. it’s so sad to note that most of the government’s infrastructure are focused in Metro Manila. Hope the local government in Zamboanga will continue in improving their beautiful place. More power! I’m from Manila.
