Weird fish in Ormoc fish market.
I went to the fish market in Ormoc, Leyte yesterday to buy a few fish. It was Good Friday and the market was almost deserted, except for a few vendors selling the odd fish.
This light reddish colored fish has two long spikes extending forward from the roof of its mouth
Are there any divers out there that can identify this fish?
Here is one more view of this guy. I was going to buy it and keep it for a closer look, but when the seller noticed my interest she jacked the price up to 5o pesos – just over 1 dollar US.
Here is an update – I took this picture on Aug 03 2010. It’s a bigger fish but resembles the smaller one in the above photos.
The vendors call it a “pineapple fish”.
This fish seems to resemble the fish in the first photos but it has whiskers and other differences.
Triggerfish and trevalley.

This big eyed red fish is super delicious, called paraka in Waray but I don’t know the English word for it.
It is one of the best fish that I have ever eaten!
I did ask a bunch of people what the fish at the top was but no one I talked to had seen it before. It really is a cool looking fish.
June 28 2010 – Today was the first time that I noticed giant squid in the market.

it looks like a sturgeon poacher same armor but the head is different from that of a regular sturgeon. Maybe its a cousin hehehe
I agree, it does resemble some type of sturgeon poacher. Have not seen one while diving around Leyte. I will ask my in-laws next time I’m there. They work in the Ormoc Market (Stall #73 I think, Malyn, Carlos Regulacion). Bought parrot fish at the market once. Bad eating. Boney.
