Kookoo’s Nest
Beach Cottages and Scuba Diving
Jamie and Nikki Ingram, from England, have built up this neat little hide away resort on the coast south of Dumaguete.
The resort is past Malatapay and Zamboangita on 10 kilometer road to an isolated cove around the corner from Tombobo Bay.
Follow the signs. For some people this could be a taste of paradise. I could be off a little bit on the mileage because the odometer on the bike was broken.
You must park in the lot on the top of the hill and then walk down a series of a hundred stairs or so down to the beach.
For some people this could be a taste of paradise.
It is remote so it is best to have transportation.
A motorbike rented in Dumaguete (250 peso / day) would be the most economical.
If you would rather hire transport Jamie and Nikki can pick you up in town or you can take a jeepney to the turn off on the national highway.
A habal-habal taxi (long seated motorbike) could then be arranged for the last 10k to the resort itself.
A lift from town to the resort runs 800 peso. From the highway 500 peso.
A ride on the back of a habal-habal motorbike is around 150 peso.
Cottages:
Toko – small place 450 peso
Hibiscus – double and single bed with balcony 650 peso
Kingfisher – largest cottage – double, 2 single beds, large balcony 1000 pesos
Driftwood – family cottage – 2 double beds, one single
prices based on 2 people – ex per 100 peso ea
Scuba diving:
beach dives 1000 peso
boat dives 1250 pesos
Kookoo’s rents snorkel and dive gear to guests and day trippers.
A typhoon passed through two weeks ago and tore up a lot of the coral and the resident frogfish has unfortunately relocated elsewhere.
The two huge gorgonians that are in deeper water survived and a are worth a look.
I went down there yesterday and did a little snorkeling to see how things survived the storm.
It was also my introduction to underwater photography. It was a lot of fun.
I never thought about it before but the fish don’t just sit there and let you take their picture.
As soon as you look their way they hide under the coral.
It kind of explains why nudibranchs and star fish are so heavily photographed.
Clown fish are good subjects too, because they will aggressively attack the camera instead of taking cover. Unfortunately I didn’t see any.
These underwater pictures are of the coral right off the beach at Kookoo’s.
The blue starfish is my first attempt.

For Regula
I was no more able to reach her at 16:00 local time. Interesting infos concerning return flights on hompages of silk air and singapur airlines. Cancelation fees will be paid by the airlines, so I would recomend to stay until return flights are garanteed.
I will try to phone later, but perhaps her pre-paid card has expired, as she also pays when I am calling her.
Thanks for forwarding this message
