Kookoos Nest Cottages

Beach Cottages and Scuba Diving

Jamie and Nikki Ingram, from England, have built up this neat little hide away resort on the coast south of Dumaguete.

It is past Malatapay and Zamboangita on 10 kilometer road to an isolated cove.

img_1024.jpgFollow the signs. I could be off a little bit on the mileage because the odometer on the bike was broken.

You must park in the lot on the top of the hill and then walk down a series of a hundred stairs or so down to the beach.

img_1041.jpg For some people this could be a taste of paradise.

It is remote so it is best to have transportation.

A motorbike rented in Dumaguete (250 peso / day) would be the most economical.

img_1026.jpgIf you would rather hire transport Jamie and Nikki can pick you up in town or you can take a jeepney to the turn off on the national highway.

A habble-habble (long seated motorbike) could then be arranged for the last 10k to the resort itself.

A lift from town to the resort runs 800 peso. From the highway 500 peso.

A ride on the back of a habble-habble motorbike is around 150 peso.

img_1022.jpg Cottages:

Toko - small place 450 peso
Hibiscus - double and single bed with balcony 650 peso
Kingfisher - largest cottage - double, 2 single beds, large balcony 1000 pesos
Driftwood - family cottage - 2 double beds, one single

prices based on 2 people - ex per 100 peso ea

Scuba diving:
beach dives 1000 peso
boat dives 1250 pesos

A typhoon passed through two weeks ago and tore up a lot of the coral and the resident frogfish has unfortunately relocated elsewhere.

The two huge gorgonians that are in deeper water survived and a are worth a look.

I went down there yesterday and did a little snorkeling to see how things survived the storm.

img_1044.jpg It was also my introduction to underwater photography. It was a lot of fun.

I never thought about it before but the fish don't just sit there and let you take their picture.

As soon as you look their way they hide under the coral.

It kind of explains why nudibranchs and star fish are so heavily photographed.

img_1049.jpg Clown fish are good subjects too, because they will aggressively attack the camera instead of taking cover. Unfortunately I didn't see any.

These underwater pictures are of the coral right off the beach at Kookoo's.

The blue starfish is my first attempt.
