Mary’s Cottages- Sabang Beach Palawan
There are mega resorts under construction on the Sabang Beach right now and the place will soon morph into a Kuta, Bali style tourist beach. Mary’s Cottages at the far end of the sand are bucking the trend for now with their budget nipa huts for backpackers and budget minded travelers.
These nipa huts are probably the most basic accommodation on the beach. The management told me that the most simple single hut, with an outside cr runs about 300 pesos. It looks like all the rooms come with a mosquito net.
Their high class nipa huts with 2 beds go for 1500 pesos, which seems a bit rich for a grass hut, but this is Palawan. The monkey trail to the underground river starts at the end of this resort. The paddle boat tour to the mangrove forest is just up the trail and is a great experience for only 100 pesos. Very few tourists take this trip, but bird watchers and reptile enthusiasts would really enjoy it.

The town of Sabang is in front of that mountain in the distance. Mary’s Cottages and Restaurant is to the left of this picture. It is in a very nice location with a restaurant that stays open until 10pm.

Sabang Palawan
Mary’s Cottages Sabang Beach Palawan – It’s probably just a matter of time before these nipa huts get flattened and a “proper” high end Palawan resort gets put on here.
They management did give me their phone number but I misplaced it. I should be back there tomorrow or the next day and will get it again. TM seems to have a signal in Sabang but Smart does not. (there are several phone services in the Philippines – TM is Touch Mobile).

Loving your Palawan posts mate! Gonna have a yarn to Bruce about getting our bikes over there for the next trip May ’10. That Viet food looks great.
Cheers

Hello Leng,
I agree with you completely. Kind of sad when “progress” ruins a good thing.
The mega resorts being built are going to change the vibe considerably.
Palawan is really not the “frontier” the advertisement people make it out to be.
The “Last Frontier” is rapidly becoming the “Second Borocay”!
cheers

Hi Lindsay,
Sounds like a good idea! Rene Saigons in town is even better.
The roads in Palawan are vastly improved and it’s a breeze to get around!
cheers

Hi DP, sad to read your article, been a while since I was there but was only simple nipa huts during my last stay.
We stayed a beautiful little resort about 15 minutes walk from Marys, cannot remember the name how ever its well known. Could be Dap Dap….The owner a nice Filipino guy whom was very artistic and boy did it show in the cottages. They were just so cute, all were different and lovely as was the food. Totally inexpensive as well.
We walked both tracks to the underground river, loved it all. had a great time. Not sure now I want to return…..
Hi Bruce,
Looks like the “Last Frontier” is fast becoming the second Borocay!
dp
ps Dap Dap is still there on the way to the waterfalls and seems to be doing well!
Hi,
I just browse your site and I love the place…And were excited to be there..
We’ve been book already to have a vacation this Feb and were looking for a place to stay. Were 15 group to be exact and we cant find a place that is affordable. Is there an available cottages that can accomodate us. But with of course, theres a place were we can cook and theres a cr.
Highly appreciated if you mail back on my ym account.
Thank you.

Hi maricel,
Most of the places in Sabang will not have cooking facilities available.
Be sure to have a look at Roberts Resort too – link

The paddle boat tour just off the monkey trail behind Mary’s Cottages is highly reccommended – link

Wish I was of more help to you.
Happy trip!

Yeah, Sabang is slowly but surely turning commercial. With the help of the City Council and Mayor, what has happened to Boracay will hopefully not happen to this awesome place.
Despite everything though, this place is definitely worth a trip. And not just for the underground river, mind you. A whole load of nature/adventure stuff like Dutch has explained can be experienced in this area.
What a trip!
marys beach resort is the best place to unwind.i really do love this place
Marys Beach resort has new restaurant cottages are much better than before pic. above i think its quite an old pictures of marys beach resort..tanx to dutch pickle.09084165206<<<>>>
Anyone got an email address for marys that works. That email address just bounces back.
Hi Sam
Sabang is a dead zone for cell signal so they probably have to have someone check their email in Puerto Princessa. It would be difficult to reserve the budget places in Sabang on line. Both Roberts and Mary’s have backpacker accommodation but they depend on walk in traffic.
Have fun!
Ps it is very difficult to get a smart signal there in Sabang, I think globe and TM is non existant – sorry

Hi, i knew for a fact that Daluyon Resort has the best accommodation and amenities but it’s kinda costly so wanna hear your recommendation for a low-end but nice and clean resort in Sabang for a couple staying next month.
Hello Eirol
Robert’s Resort or Mary’s Resort are the best options for budget accommodation on the beach in Sabang, Palawan.
cheers
