Sheridan – promoting ecotourism?

This plush resort is under construction half way down the beach in Sabang. The Sterling Hotels group has decided to make a play here and it looks like a good call. I don’t see any reason that it would not be a huge financial success, but places like this will definitely change the “vibe” or feel of Sabang.  I will try to get back there and talk with the management about getting some pictures of the completed resort next year.

The Sheridan certainly is first class.

You can arrange a massage on the beach if that sort of thing appeals to you.

Sabang Beach is beautiful but changing – not necessarily for the bad – but it will never again be that secluded remote paradise that some people are searching for.

The local Sabang Underground River is already a major world class attraction getting thousands of visitors every month and pumping money into the local economy.

It has become important for the government to preserve this part of the world and keep it as pristine as possible for everyone to enjoy. The wildlife is undisturbed and the forests are are not destroyed in the process.

I suspect Ugong Rock will become a huge tourist draw as well, if they get the zip line in place in 2010 as planned. It should be pretty cool flying over those rice fields.

The Mangrove Swamp paddle boat tour near Michi’s Resort and Mary’s Resort is a grass roots project that might get more interest as the tourists pour in and are looking for things to do. Bird watchers will find this to be of interest because of the variety of birds hanging around in the swamp there. Pygmy kingfishers and the big kingfishers with orange beaks seem common here.

Mary’s and Robert’s still have nipa huts on the beach, but as the price of land skyrockets, it is likely that these places will evolve with the rest of the beach.

Oh well, what can you say.

I still kind of liked my 500 peso nipa at Robert’s just a few steps from the beach. Sure the electric went off at 11pm, but then you could see the stars so clearly and have the beach all to yourself for a midnight swim.
