Unlike the tuk-tuk of Thailand or the becak of Indonesia the Filipino tricycle has a side car that is used to haul just about anything.
Some are rigged up to haul live pigs and others haul tuna fish but most haul people
I saw one a few weeks ago that had a huge load of pig heads. I was getting lazy and didn't have my camera in my pocket, bummer.
In Mindanao trikes used to haul the lower grade tuna from the ports to local markets. In some areas it is not unusual to see more than 8 people piled up in one of these contraptions. The weight they can bear is unbelievable.
In the southern provinces in Samar a non-motorized model is used at the cost of 3 pesos for runs in town. A big number of locals are able to earn a living driving these rigs.
The ones in Banaue charge huge fees to cart the tourists around to the rice terrace viewpoints but tourist traps are usually expensive everywhere.
Many parts of Indonesia just have ojeks, or motorbikes with driver and you just hop on the back. The becak, or 3 wheeler, was quite popular in Ambon but when things went haywire in 1999 huge piles of them were burned so I am not sure if they are still a big thing over there anymore. If any one has been there recently and wants to let me know just put a note on the forum. Thanks.
The wierdest transport I've come across yet is the pedal bike taxis near the Sunda Kelapa (harbor) in Jakarta. They have a padded seat on the back and you just have a seat. Another classic is those little motorized orange 3 wheelers that buzz around downtown Jakarta.
Here a full sized cow rides in the side car of a cattle hauling trike near Abo Abo, Palawan.
This fat pig was taking a ride in Ormoc, Leyte this morning.
