Kamanaog Cave

img_0517.jpgKamanaog Cave - Samar Philippines

There is a steady breeze inside this cave generated by the wings of thousands and thousands of bats.

A beautiful Philippine cobra rests near the entrance. This one was very docile and did not mind posing for a few pictures but might become annoyed if you started squeezing it with a snake squashing tool like the guys do on tv.

img_0508.jpgThis whole cave is crawling with life probably made possible by all the bat droppings that carpet the floor. Crickets and some ugly cockroach like bug are in abundance.

The quantity of bats is breathtaking. There are so many that they occasionally brush against you as they fly by. If one crashes and falls to the floor it will get devoured by the crickets.

img_0518.jpgThese fat crickets are found throughout the Jaibong cave system but seem to thrive especially well in this cave.

I think that they feast on the bat guano. I was wondering if the cobra eats them. Joni thinks that they eat the bats for a primary food source.

This cave has a large central room and the floor is a soft ooze and its an easy one to navigate.

The steady roar generated by all those bats flapping around is unreal.
