The Rolet Hotel is probably the nicest place to stay in Catbalogan.

A clean double with air con and cable tv is 950 pesos per nite.

There are plenty of places to stay in this town.

Other choices – Summers Garden, Maqueda bay, First Choice – but there are more basic ones in town too.

img_0259.jpgMost of the college students stay in boarding houses that charge around 1300 per month.

Samar isn’t on the tourist trail but the occasional foreigner passes through. One of the biggest cave systems in the Philippines is nearby attracting spelunkers from Europe who spent a bit of time mapping and exploring.

img_0228.jpgCatbalogan itself is the hub for central Samar but there are no commercial flights to this place yet.

Some planes fly into Calabayog to the north or to Ormoc and Tacloban in Leyte to the south. Buses can then take you the rest of the way.

Boats to the surrounding islands leave from the pier hauling passengers and freight. They are informal operators with no ticket offices or set schedules.

Catbalogan bustles with 3 wheeled peddle cabs keeping things clean and quiet. 4 pesos per person gets you anywhere in town.

It is a quiet and friendly little town.

I am planning to spend a vacation from Oct. 27 to Nov.5, here in Catbalogan. I want to know if there’s an available room and what is your single room rate.
Thank you in advance for your prompt reply..

    Hello Barbara,

“dutchpickle” is a travel site but we only put up information and don’t make the reservations and are not connected with any of the places we review.

Rolet Hotel rooms run around 950 pesos per nite.

Maqueda bay has rooms on the waterfront for 850 pesos.

Summers Garden Pension house might be a possibility – try to negotiate a monthly rate with Mrs Pacoli. There is a pleasant garden and the feel is different than you would experience at a regular hotel. It also has character and you can coax some interesting stories from Mr Pacoli (84 yrs) as he remembers WW2 when the Japanese took over the place and turned it into their headquarters.

Choice Hotel has just opened next door to the Summers Garden too.

I suggest just checking into one of these places for one night and then do some footwork the following day and strike up your best deal.
