It rains a lot in Samar. Ruel and the welder work on replacing the roof.

At the request of reader “Joe” we put together 50 simple sentences in this lesson. I am going to keep up on this because it helps me too.

There will be some mistakes, but keep in mind that Waray varies a bit by region and there is a lot of borrowing from the Spanish and English language.  Most people speak tagalog or Cebuano but English becomes more rare the further you get from town.

There are many Mormon missionaries in Samar. They are very friendly and speak Waray well but are cagey about sharing it with other westerners. Maybe they want exclusivity so they have a stronger position from which to convert the “natives”.

Tag pira an ticket?

10) Do you like Manila.
Karuyag nimo ha Manila?

11) It rains a lot in Samar.
Nauran pirne ha Samar. (uran-rain)

12) What is your favorite tv program?
Ano an imo paborito na programa ha tv? (note the cheesy knock off of favorite and program)

13) What is your age?
Pira na imo edad?

14) Do you have any children?
May ada kana mga anak? (anak-Indonesian knock off)

15) Samar is beautiful but undeveloped.
Maupay an Samar pero dire na didibelop.

16) There are not many tourists here.
Waray mga torista dinhi.

17) I like to ride my motorbike in the mountains.

18) I drove around Samar Island in 5 days.
