Dakota Grasslands – I took this picture of an American Buffalo last night at sunset.
Small herds of buffalo still run free in western North Dakota near the Painted Canyon. There were about 200 bison on the north side of Interstate 94 in the Grasslands Park.
Old homestead on the prairie.
Wide open spaces.
The new look – the introduction of a new drilling technique called “hydraulic fracking” has changed the entire landscape in North Dakota. There are around 7000 pumps spread out over the entire Bakken Formation.
The roads have a red color because most have a base made up of red scoria rock.
Part of the Painted Canyon.
Pump site.

Buffalo munching away. They seem to like feeding at night.
This buffalo stayed around until 1:30 am and then headed out on the range. Imagine what it must have been like to hear a million buffaloes thundering across the grasslands at one time!
