Mekong River

Bobbing along on the tourist barge down the Mekong to Luan Prabang is pretty cool.

Most of the Lao people buzz by in their jet boats because they don’t have the time to waste on the slow boat.

Lao visas were only given for a few weeks so it became pretty much a standard travelers route followed by a stay in Van Viang and then down to Vientien.

Some hardy souls go down to Savanaket and Pakse breathing fine red dust in a bus that dips into every pothole along the way.

It is also possible to take a different red dust road across to Vietnam or cross the bridge at Vientien and go into Thailand.

The plain of jars at Ponsavan is said to be an unusual site and it would be great to take more time someday and go up there.

Bob the French Canadian that has the bar in Van Viang has some great stories and information and is a good guy to talk to. He is married to a Hmong woman and has been on a number of excursions with her family into the outback. That would really be the way to see some amazing country.
