It was a pleasant surprise to see my old friend Phillip pull alongside some horse and buggy rigs at an Amish auction with his 1988 stretch Cadillac flea market mobile!
He had not cut his hair or shaved since he got back from Iraq years ago. He is not Amish but kind of looks like he could be. (note – traditional Amish prefer not to be photographed)
Pil is definitely one of a kind. About 15 years ago he invited me to spend the winter with him in the Philippines. After a month I got restless and hopped a southbound ship and landed up in Indonesia. He awakened the travel bug inside me.
Most people could not survive with Phil’s business program but this guy really does enjoy his life and knows people everywhere.
In the rice terraces of Banaue in the Philippines he is known as “Phillip Morris” and he often bought wood carvings and jewelery to take home and sell at fairs and flea markets.
Eventually I brought him to Bali Indonesia and helped him set up a small import business doing about a 40 foot container a year. They loved him over there.

The Amish Santa – Phillip – About 15 years ago Phil bought out a Dollar Store’s inventory of inflatable foil Happy Birthday balloons. He decided to use my baggage allowance and we landed up with 4 – 70 lb cartons full misc junk. We brought it to the park in Tagbilaran Bohol in the Philippines.
I sat in the back of our truck inflating the balloons and attaching the strings – Phillip would grab about 50 at a time and go galloping through the park with hundreds of screaming kids chasing him. He would release a few at a time and the kids would scramble for more. They had a blast ! I am not sure who had more fun – the kids, Phillip , or the rest of us just rolling on the floor laughing : )
