Kupang – Lavalon Bar
No visit to Kupang would be complete without having a beer at the Lavalon bar located on the point in the below picture..
The view is great, the beer is cold, and it is a good place to pick up travel information for East and West Timor.
The bar is owned by Edwin, a guy that reminds me of Carlos Santana. He can usually be found sleeping in a hammock out back when he is not fiddling around with his computer.
He lets customers use it for 5,000 rupiah an hour. The expats tell me that it is probably the fastest one in Kupang but the one at Telkom is about the same.
The computer is covered by a plastic box for protection in case rain starts blowing in from the sea.
If the weather gets too bad they just throw a tarp over the whole works until it blows over.
It is great to be facing the ocean with an nice breeze in your face and a cold beer in your hand while checking your e-mail.
There are usually a few local boys from the country selling woven blankets and carved lime containers for the betel nut.
Lavalon seems to be the social center of Kupang for the expats who live here. Most have married local girls and are a great group of guys who are very helpful.
This is a good place to pick up current travel info to East Timor because most travelers stop here for a beer.
Surfers on the way to Nemberela on Rote Island drop by as well as budget travelers staying at the Lavalon guest house located about 100 yards from the bar.
Edwin Lerrick has a pretty good web site packed with information about this area.

Beautiful cloth some locally made.

Lavalon Bar in Kupang West Timor is a great meeting point. Edwin has heaps of information about the area
This was from the year 2006
Hi Edwin, I am back in Germany since Monday and the spring is coming! I spend six days in Dili and this was quite long because Rita’s Backpackers Single-Rooms were occupied by Russians and I slept in a dorm with eight beds and a nervous Belgian. But on the weekend I met interesting people at the beach bars. From there I flew to Bali where I spend five days in quiet Sanur, than I jumped over to Jogjakarta (Borodobur, Prabanang and Mt. Merati) and travelled back to Jakarta by train. I am sure I will come back next European winter!
Did you write the letter to the editor of Jakarta Post and/or Jakarta Globe in case of the Sail Indonesia? What about the landwinning project at your coastline? Because of the crashed Town Archive in Cologne the Lord Mayor quit this week. Greetings, Alex
Vie gates Alex,
Good to hear from you but try the links in the above story to get to Edwin.
I am the “dutchpickle” now living in the Philippines but have been found at Edwin’s Bar – “The Lavalon” many times.
I am curious if there is any new information about Dili East Timor, that you would care to share – especially the “Backpackers Guesthouse”. I have many fond memories of that place. Henry turned it into a refugee camp for many of the locals in 2006 when the country was in turmoil and I have always held him in high regard.
Might I suggest a trip to Alor and Pulau Pantar and perhaps Lewaleba when you return.
regards

The Lavalon Bar in Kupang is the top place to get recent information about travel in West Timor and other islands including Sabu , Rote , Sumba , Lembata , Alor , Komodo , and Rinca . Other travelers passing through have interesting tales as well. I met a Swiss couple a few years ago (maybe 2006) that came all the way from Switzerland to Kupang by motorbike. They felt that riding through the mountains of Pakistan was the most beautiful part of the trip. Later I met Linda – a strong lady that rode her bike all the way from Gibraltar. very cool ! She also played a sweet violin which she took along and would play for the kids.
Edwin is a wealth of information and the tight knit group of expats that frequent his pub have useful info and hints as well. The location is good, the internet is convenient, great view and as Edwin mentions the food is pretty good too.
