Sinulog 2014 starts this weekend but I will be in LA and will miss the main event

It has been raining steadily the past 3 days in Cebu City, Philippines but the preparations for Sinulog 2014 are in full swing. It is now over 2 months since Typhoon Yolanda caused widespread damage in Leyte and Samar Islands but Cebu City sustained very little damage during that storm. Samar and Leyte and other areas will take a long time yet to rebuild but it is business as usual in the city. There is a low pressure system covering large areas of the Philippines from Davao to Luzon now so the rain is a hassle – but people living in shelters have had to deal with bad weather since Nov 8 and many are still living under tarps.

This is the Sunday before the 3rd Sunday of January which is the traditional time for the big parade held every year.

Practicing parade formations the Sunday before the main event. Unfortunately I will miss the actual Sinulog but the crowds can be a bit much and streets are closed so all traffic is on foot.

Sinulog the Sunday before – I was just walking to the 7/11 on Osmena Blvd and snapped a few pics in the rain. This is a dramatic contrast to the situation in Leyte and Samar and a few areas in northern Cebu and Panay. People are merely surviving in many other areas – being here is like changing channels on tv – suddenly everything is completely different.

No worries mate…I just need to know by the end of February so I can start to make plans for the trip…have a safe trip back home to LA tonight.
Its been 16 years since I was last over in LA a lot would have changed over those 16 years I will have to make another trip back one day to see how things have changed since 1998.

Hi Ricky how are you? Nice pic’s of Sinulog 2014. Believe it or not its still raining here in Cebu island. Another typhoon in Mindanao now called Agaton. However not to powerful yet. Take care and hope you had a nice flight home.
