Safari Park – Calauit Island
Zebras, Giraffes, Palawan Bearded Pig, Calamian Deer, Palawan Bearcat
21 Giraffes and 37 zebras have found a home in the 2760 hectare Calauit Island game reserve northwest of Busuanga Island.
This may seem a bit strange but it looks very similar to the African savanna in this game reserve established by President Marcos in the 70’s.
The animals are used to a few tourists straggling through but most keep their distance, with the notable exception of “Atina”.
This huge giraffe has several of her offspring watching from a distance as she comes in for a snack.
Beautiful giraffes they are!
Our guide, Florante Salvacion makes sure that the tourists stay in front of the giraffe if they want to take pictures or feed her.
He believes she could spook if someone comes in behind her.
She seemed to be a very gentle animal and Patrick hand fed her.
Patrick, a guy that splits his time between Manila and Hawaii, seemed to hit it off with the old girl straight away.
We took motorbikes from Coron town to New Busuanga, then Buluang and then to Malacachao (Malacatio) where you can get a lift over to the small island of Calauit for about 400 peso round trip.
Bikes can be rented in Coron for 800 to 1000 pesos per day. The road trip takes 3 hours each way on gravel.
It isn’t very difficult but for first timers it might be a bit stressful when you hit thick gravel.
Vans can be hired from Coron for around 7500 pesos for the round trip and pumpboats will make the trip for around 10,000 pesos.
If you share the costs with other travelers it takes away a bit of the sting.
