There were Portugese GNR mixed in to help keep the peace. These guys do
have a certain style about the way they do things. They usually do not
wear helmets which is good because it might mess up their hair.
From Natarbora to Viqueque the road disappears in some areas. In the dry
season it is not particularly difficult but would probably be a real
challenge in the wet.
The trip to Maliana from Dili takes 4 to 5 hours depending on road conditions and
what you are driving. There is a line of restaurants around the halfway
point where you can take a break.
These guys will take you across to the island and back for 5
dollars. Jaco has no permanent settlement but some fishermen hang out
there fishing the channel. If you decide to stay there be sure to bring
drinking water or coconuts.
Nema's Lodge on Atauro is the best place to stay if you are going to be
there for a while. This island is hot and dusty in the dry season but it
really can rain during the wet.
Many of the buildings in Oecussi were destroyed in 1999 but there are a
few interesting remnants left standing that still give the place a
Portugese feel.
You will have to arrange a carnet which is basically a passport for
your vehicle if you plan to travel overland with a vehicle with foreign registration.
